Simulation of separation processes in medical devices

Separation of blood components is of great importance in medicine. Empirical and experimental methods have been used to develop separation devices traditionally. CFD-Simulations of such complex separation processes now offer an efficient and inexpensive alternative for systematic device optimisation.

In this instance, blood is separated into its components by rotation. Numerical simulation then predicts fluid phase borders under complex geometric and different working conditions.
The separation ability of a blood separator is defined as the difference between the highest and lowest concentration of the related phase.

Simulated influence values:

  • Angular velocity
  • Viscosity
  • Inlet velocity
  • Density difference between the two phases
