Successfull completion of European project "VPH DARE@IT" 

Invitation MedTec 2017

In March 2017, ASD’s participation in the EU-funded research project "Dementia Research enabled by IT" (VPH DARE @ IT) dealing with the subject of simulations-based dementia research was successfully completed.
Aim of the project is the generation of different modelling tools for the early diagnosis of various dementia diseases. The project comprised the expertise of 19 national and international partners, from industrial and academic research to clinical application.

Within this project, ASD GmbH coordinated the work on metabolic and biochemical modelling and developed a novel dementia-specific metabolic network model for the description of energy metabolism in the brain. The direct project partners, the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) and the Technical Research Center Finland (VTT) assisted in the development of patient-specific models for the progression of Alzheimer's disease.

The coupling of the simulation of capillary oxygen supply in the brain with the modelling of oxygen consumption as a result of neuronal activity, developed by ASD, represents a significant progress of the state of the art. It allows a personalised analysis using a multi-scale simulation pipeline and presents a novel, clinically applicable method of disease assessment and differential diagnosis. Furthermore, the obtained findings allow conclusions on the influence of metabolic and vascular changes on the analysis of data obtained by functional magnetic resonance tomography.

A model of brain energy metabolism developed within the project was published in the  Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism.

Award "Innovative through research"

Stent deployment simulation ARTreat

ASD was honoured with the “Innovative through research” award of the “Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft" in 2016. With this award, on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Education and Research, companies are recognized for their engagement in research and development.

Because of its expertise in combining modern engineering simulation methods with biological modelling and predictions, ASD GmbH has been involved over the past two decades in a number of leading national and European research projects. These are related to the application of sophisticated information and communication technologies to medical products and medical problem definitions as well as projects of the VPH (Virtual Physiological Human) – an initiative to enable the realistic modelling and simulation of human organ systems.

Completion of the project "Development and testing of simulation based optimization methods for 3D-cell reactors with MatriGrid-structure".A project for the development of a simulation based optimization method for three-dimensional micro-cell-reactors  funded partially by the German Ministry of Economics was completed successfully in August 2015. The project started in 2012 as a cooperation project between ASD GmbH and the project team for nano biosystems technology of the Technical University Ilmenau.

As a result of this project, ASD GmbH has a validated its method for a sequential simulation of nano-structures and a subsequential automatical optimization of design and process parameters using a genetic algorithm.

First round of the FDA

In autumn 2013, the first round of the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) -initiated study regarding the validation of flow simulation and blood damage prediction in medical devices ended and the results were published.

ASD participated in this study among 26 other international institutions. With its comprehensive know how ASD was able to predict very accurately the experimentally measured flow parameters provided by the FDA.

The FDA has announced to further investigate into the application and standardisation of numerical analyses for the flow within medical devices in a second round. The main focus here will be the numerical and experimental analysis of the three-dimensional flow characteristics and the haemolysis potential within a simplified blood pump (see figure).

Due to the excellent results achieved in the first study and the company’s long-term experience in the design of blood pumps, ASD will again participate in this project.

EU-funded integrated research project 'VPH-Dare@IT'

  • Stent deployment simulation ARTreat

The kick-off meeting of the EU-funded integrated research project 'VPH-Dare@IT' took place in Sheffield (UK) from 15th to 17th of April 2013. The aim of the four-year project, comprising twenty partners from nine different countries, is to develop patient - specific models for individual differential diagnosis of dementia.
Towards this common goal ASD GmbH will deliver mathematical models for prominent pathways of energy metabolism and aggregation of beta-amyloid in the brain. These network-oriented models will allow for the analysis of the influence of lifestyle and genetic risk factors on disease onset and progression. In addition to the development of models ASD GmbH is responsible for the coordination and integration of mathematical models for various different aspects of Alzheimer`s disease developed by our project partners. Direct interactions regarding the metabolic network modelling exist with the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) and the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.

Artreat - Review Meeting

Managing Director of ASD GmbH, Dr. Catrin Bludszuweit-Philipp, travelled to Brussels to provide a report to the European Commission together with the other 17 partners of the European ARTreat research project. The state of the project was reported on in detail, procedures were explained and the future working steps were presented. The project has now been underway for three years and is set to come to an end in December this year with the completion of a clinically usable software tool. Among others, an operation planning tool to assist decision making during stent treatments to coronary arteries will be available for use. The principal task of ASD GmbH in this context is the development of an automated system for the calculation of stent-widening in a patient-specific blood vessel. In three dimensional vessel geometries from imaging procedures, the software enables the doctor to complete the virtual positioning of the stent before the actual operation. After the calculation of the resulting vessel widening and the virtual blood flow analysis, it is then possible to develop the optimum treatment strategy.

EU research project "AneurIST" successfully completed

Four years of intensive research on "Integrated Biomedical Informatics for the Management of Cerebral Aneurysms" were concluded in March 2010.

The project "@neurIST" with an investment volume of 17 million Euro, with 29 European and 5 non-European partners served a better understanding of  the causes, the pre- diction and the treatment methods for cerebral aneurysms.

ASD provided its long-term know how in the simulation of complex physical-biological processes to support various tasks, particularly the

  • further development of the ASD thrombosis model for the prediction of the onset and growth of blood clots in untreated and treated (with stents and/or coils) aneurysms
  • Simulation of the intervention with coils and/or stents regarding their biomechanical, haemodynamic and coagulation impact
  • Analysis of over 200 clinical cases of cerebral aneurysms provided by several clinical centers with the @neurIST tool chain for the classification and identification of rupture risk criteria.


From the final project meeting in Barcelona in March 2010 it was clear, that this project not only revealed interesting and advanced expertises but also led to many new contacts with national and international entrepreneurs and research institutions. Future projects will be based on the established cooperation status.

Results of FDA „Critical Path Initiative” to validate CFD

ASD Advanced Simulation & Design GmbH was one of 28 participants from 6 countries who contributed to an initiative of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) aiming at the standardisation of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques used to evaluate performance and blood damage safety in medical devices:

The project goals are to

  • establish a guidance document for computational studies in device review
  • provide input into standards development for the use of computational fluid dynamics methods in medical device design and validation
  • serve as benchmarks for future research and development in this area

 

In a first step, a simple nozzle design was chosen to perform blood flow analysis for a sudden expansion and a conical diffuser: CFD results for velocity and pressure distributions are compared to quantitative flow visualisation measurements. Simulation-based haemolysis predictions (obtained from 11 institutions) will be compared with in-vitro blood damage experiments. A further part of this initiative will consist of the computational analysis of a ventricular assist device.
First results were published at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Artifical Internal Organs in Dallas, USA. A current survey about the improvement of flow modeling were summarized in a further poster.

New European research project „ARTreat“ started

Artheriosclerosis – this creeping disease which often remains undetected over years is in the main focus of many medical and biochemical research activities.
Characterised by a progressive degeneration of the arterial wall with the build-up of plaques to these walls, artheriosclerosis manifests itself with ischaemia, thrombosis, heard attack, stroke and sudden death.

ASD participates in a new European Research Projectungs with 18 partners from 13 countries and a financial volume of 10,5 Mio €. „ARTreat“ started in September 2008 and creates patient-specific models of the cardiovascular system and of artheriosclerotic plaque formation. The ambitious aim of the project is to provide cardiologists and vascular surgeons with tools which will be able to support them before, during and after a clinical intervention.

A three-level patient model will allow
·   the reconstruction of the three-dimensional patient geometry,
·   the modelling of the patient-specific blood flow, blood particle dynamics and
    biological processes leading to plaque formation,
·   the simulation of the interventionial procedures to treat plaqued arteries

Within „ARTreat“, ASD will apply its long-term experiences in the area of virtual stenting procedures as well as the company’s expertise in the simulation of complex physical-biological processes, investigate blood flow and coagulation behaviour in blood vessels.

A clear structure, which meets the requirements of the wealth of services offered, facilitates the visitor in a quick orientation and easy access to additional information on particular simulation focuses.
Many new application examples from very different industry sectors give a comprehensive insight into the capabilities and results when using modern simulation tools.

Because we are permanently confronted with new, interesting tasks (surely interesting for a wide audience alike) we will probably never reach the state of completeness with our internet presentation. However, it is our claim to update the site on a regular basis and to enrich not only the News section with ambitious topics and interesting visualisations.
