Ventilation and air-conditioning, building engineering

The task of ventilating and air-conditioning systems is to ensure in a room the required values of temperature, humidity and airflow velocity. Closely related to this are demands on building services engineering regarding the air-conditioning and the heat-supply facilities.

The underlying physical processes, namely fluidmechanical and thermal, are analysed and optimised using modern methods of numerical flow simulation. This offers new possibilities to preview and efficiently plan new buildings or rooms.

As an example, the tools of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) have become indispensable for the assessment of air flow, particle contamination and temperature distributions in cleanrooms. They likewise support the optimisation of cooling systems and ventilation facilities. The close correlation of the air flow with the components of air conditioners and ventilators, leading to vibrations, noise pollution and erosion of the material, are investigated with simulations of the coupled fluid-structure interactions.
